The Contemplative Society was founded in 1997 and membership has grown steadily each year as a deep and wide-spread interest has developed in this organization which supports the Christian tradition of silent prayer. The Contemplative Society offers an opportunity for developing a consistent and balanced path of spiritual wisdom, rooted in prayer, silence, mindful work and the meditative reading of scripture.
Workshops, quiet days, and retreats are offered regularly through the Society. The Contemplative Society maintains a calendar of these events on their website. Teachers include Cynthia Bourgeault, PhD, an Episcopal priest and principal teacher for the Contemplative Society since 1998. Cynthia has been a priest since 1979 and is well known throughout North America as a conference speaker, retreat leader and author. Christopher Page also leads Contemplative Society retreats and quiet days. The Contemplative Society has sponsored retreats with Franciscan priest and well-known author, Richard Rohr and Bruno Barnhart, a Camoldolese hermit from Big Sur, California.
St. Philip staff supports the contemplative tradition, gathering together at the beginning of each workday for silent prayer. Christopher and Heather Page are both certified instructors in Centering Prayer (a silent prayer practice) and regularly lead introductory workshops on Vancouver Island and the mainland.
