The People of St Philip

A certain amount of structure and expertise is required to keep any Church running smoothly and St. Philip's employs two full-time and five part-time people who serve in a leadership role here. However the Church operates primarily on the gifts of time and energy freely given by members of the parish. Many more than these five people are required to keep the daily life of this community operational.

Discernment of gifts and enabling those gifts to flourish are central to our Church life, and individuals are encouraged to initiate, accept and carry through on tasks in every area of our life together.

All the Lesson Readers, Greeters, Home Group Leaders, Bulletin Folders, -- even the Treasurer and Envelope Secretary, Lawn-Mowers and Weed-Pullers, Money Counters, Servers, Chalice Bearers, Prayer Ministers, Musicians, Nursery Care Givers, Sound Technicians, Altar Guild, Sunday School Teachers and all the Parish Council positions are faithfully filled by a variety of volunteers. If you would like to share in any of these roles, please speak up. We welcome your involvement!

He has an interest in the contemplative tradition, and in the classical spiritual writings of Christian history. Especially gifted in preaching, teaching, and writing, Christopher is the author of three books: Christ Wisdom (2004), Mark’s Gospel, Awakening the Voice Within, (2005) and The Way of Courage, Being God’s People in a Broken World (2006). The Reverend Harry Eerkes

Harry joined St. Philip’s staff as an Associate Priest (part-time) in November, 2005.

Harry’s journey to the priesthood was a convoluted one. After 4 years of teaching school, he decided to learn more about what makes people do what they do. After earning a degree in Psychology, he worked as a clinical psychologist and a teacher of psychology, eventually moving into a specialty of working with people with acquired brain injury. In 1990 he finally gave in to the life-long call to ministry in the church. During his ten years of ordained ministry he served 5 years as the rector of Holy Trinity Church in Sooke.

Shannon Carmichael is our Children’s Ministry Worker

We are blessed to have Shannon as our Children's Ministry Worker.Shannon develops the curriculum for Sunday mornings, coordinates the Teacher's roster, maintains all the supplies, works on special events, but most importantly she prays regularly for each child and teacher and the programs they run. And run they do! When our children come to Sunday School they experience a place that is designed to let them know that God cares about them. The children are accepted and respected and they participate in a very active and sometimes noisy environment. God's world is presented to them to experience and explore. When they return to the church service, there are crafts at the back tables which relate to the theme downstairs - or they can sit with their family - or they can sit with their friends! They are a pretty fluid lot!

The St. Philip website has become an exciting and much more interactive place with the expertise of Peter Rowand and other Web members.

It reflects the many activities and gifts of the people who participate in the life of this parish, is filled with pictures, activities, Sunday sermons in case you miss one or want to send it along to a friend.

The goal of the St. Philip website and our presence on the internet is to enhance the mission of St. Philip Anglican Church, to help centre the meaning of our lives in the presence of Christ, and to reflect the nature of our parish community.

Parish Council as a group share responsibility for the life, tone, direction and activity of our church community. Our Council is elected at the Annual General Meeting in January. When we choose members of our community to serve on Council, we are identifying those we believe God is calling into leadership.

We believe that in order to be faithful to God’s direction, we need to hear what God is saying to all members of the community. Members of parish Council want to hear from you. We want to know where you feel God is leading you in your involvement in the life of this church family. Tell us about the gifts you see within yourself which you desire to contribute to our life together.

The church can only ever be what those who participate in it are willing to make it, by their life together. Parish Council members desire to cooperate with all members of the community and with God, to encourage, support and uphold the work God is doing among us. We desire to support this community in discovering God’s ways for us to bear witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Please support your Council by prayer and encouragement.

Council meets once a month, -- generally on the third Tuesday of each month. Minutes of the Council meetings are transcribed and posted on the big, main bulletin board downstairs in the lower Church hall.

Synod Delegates represent our involvement in, and our commitment to the larger Anglican Church. Individual parishes do not exist alone. We are an integral part of the wider community of churches on Vancouver Island, throughout Canada and around the world. Diocesan Synod represents the Diocese of British Columbia (i.e. Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands). Representation is proportional depending on membership. St. Philip's sends 4 delegates to these meetings.
